Tips and tricks to keep your home warm this winter

It's not all about the boiler; here are our tips to keeping your home warm

Bleed the radiators

If your radiators aren't heating up, then it is likely that you have trapped air within your central heating system. In that case, your radiators will need bleeding.

Bleeding the radiators allows the trapped air to escape and let the hot water flow in your radiator again.

Use thick curtains

Thick curtains are one of the best ways to stop your home losing heat through the windows. Don't forget to let the sun light in during the day - use as much natural, free heat from the sun as possible.

Close your curtains at dusk to help your home retain that heat.

Stop the mini-draughts

Letter boxes, cat-flaps and even older keyholes can let a lot of cold air into your home. Consider adding extra barriers such as letter box excluder brushes.

Cover bare floor boards

Bare floor boards, if not properly insulated, can account for as much as 10% of heat loss (source: National Energy Foundation). If you don't want to carpet over, just using rugs can help reduce the overall heat loss.

Use foil behind your radiators

If you have a radiator attached to an external wall, use aluminium/kitchen foil behind the radiator. The reflective nature of the foil stops heat from escaping through the wall, and instead bounce back into the room.

Check the boiler

Ok, this one is all about the boiler. Before winter sets in, make sure that your boiler is working correctly. If it isn't, get it repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
